My tiny tidying habit

This is not something I usually blog about but I’m all about simplicity and it’s time I talk about it on my blog.

I have low energy levels and I need to deploy all sorts of tricks when it comes to tidying our home.

I’m a creative chaotic, and therefore it tends to be messy here. It’s not bad, if I’d spend half an hour I could tidy the whole house (3 storeys, so it would involve a lot of me running up and down stairs).

But, I can’t spend half an hour on that in one go anymore. What I can do is my little trick: I tidy away one thing before I leave a room, whether it’s trash or something that needs to be stored elsewhere.

Then I can either take it to its designated spot on the same floor or I put it in a small bag I have for that purpose to be taken to another floor.

This system is genius. If I’m not able to go downstairs, I still am able to take stuff to the office and bathroom, which are on the same floor as the bedroom.

And it works. I enter the spaces on the upstairs floor several times a day and pick up whatever feels most out of place and give it its home again.

It barely costs me energy to do that, but it makes all the difference.

My bedroom is currently all chaotic after both of us were floored with a terrible cold, but it slowly is put right thanks to my new habit.

I’m already changing the cleaning too, creating micro habits for that that I can do even if my battery is running on empty.

For instance, I don’t clean a room in one go anymore. Instead, I just clean the most important first and then the rest of the room in small steps at a later time, upon entering the room.

It’s so liberating to let go of the idea that I have to do all the things in one go.
