What you can do when you just can't create
Dear Creative Soul,
Sometimes life throws so many things at you that you just can’t write, paint or craft the thing that usually is your favourite.
You can respond to this in two ways.
The first way is to tell yourself, "I’m a loser! I can't do anything!” Or this gem, “See? I wasn't born to write or create art!"
The second way of responding is this: create something else!
The analogy of jars
Let's say each form of creativity you love is a set of jars in various sizes, all filled with fluids.
The biggest jar, that stands for your favourite form of creativity, is usually full to the brim. You empty and fill it at the same time.
Until that moment you just can’t anymore.
That’s when the smaller jars come into play.
They are still full, as you still enjoy that craft from time to time.
You now can use it to fill the biggest jar again.
An example: writing is my biggest jar. When words won’t come, I grab my sketchbook and start to doodle, knit socks, or make collages.
Before I know it, words start to come back to me, and I write up a storm again.
Don’t know what other creative adventure you could go on?
Check YouTube for inspiration or go to a craft store and pick out a craft that excites you.
I bet, however, that as a creative, you are like me and probably have tons of stuff to create with to begin with.
When you keep creating, the words will come back, the brush will call your name again, the pencil will be in your hand.
Your big jar will start to fill, because you keep creating, and feeding that creative spark, one jar at a time.
Create on!,
Sylvia
