A fun artjournal experiment
I was sorting through some pictures I took of my art journals when I came across a picture of an art journal project I did years ago. I remembered how much I loved the result that I decided to turn that picture into a fun creative post.
Here are the simple steps to recreate my experiment.
I use watercolours for these collages, and use those throughout the steps. I think that coloured pencils, wax crayons, pastels or markers will work just as well, in case you love using those more.
I also love to make these doodles with mixed media. Adding black ink lines like in some of my example paintings works really well.
You will also need a paper cutter and a glue stick or other glue. And an art journal or something like that, of course.
Step 1: prep
Cut some watercolour paper into pieces that are a little smaller than your art journal pages and get your watercolours or other favourite tools.
Step 2: paint
Play on the paper, throw colour around. Don't worry about mistakes as in step 3 you're going to cut the painting up anyway.

Step 3: cut and glue
Now comes the fun part! Get your paper cutter, measure up your paper, and then cut the paper in uniform squares (I haven't tried this with rectangles but that should work too). Then shuffle the pieces.
Get your glue stick, and glue all the jumbled cubes on a page in your art journal. Turn the cubes around and make a fun pattern.
You can also make a slightly larger painting and then add the extra pieces on top like I've done here:

Bonus digital step
If you like to play with digital tools, you can take a picture of the image (or scan it), and add layers of colour over it, to make it a completely different artwork. I printed this one to add to the artjournal on another page.

Whatever you do, remember to have fun!
