A perfect New York City afternoon
In August/September 2016 we had a pretty epic trip planned, flying half way across the globe to the US. We had tickets for two Dresden Dolls shows, one in Boston and one in New York, and had planned to stay in both cities for some time around those shows.
Boston was amazing, both the concert and the city, and soon it became time to go to New York. Given that our trip was super expensive already, we’d made the (oh so stupid) decision to travel from Boston to New York by bus.
It was so very much delayed we’d missed the New York concert.
My first introduction to New York completely overwhelmed me, as we exited the bus terminal on Times Square. Then we had to figure out the subway to the hotel we’d booked. The trip got even worse when I turned out to have food poisoning and had to spend the first full day at the hotel.
So I was pretty grumpy about the trip to New York so far, even when I felt better the next day, and we hopped on the subway to go explore the city.
Then I saw ads for a Star Trek Convention happening a few days after.
We looked up information about the convention, and found that on one of the days, many of the cast of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine would be present. I was so happy, DS9 is one of my favourite shows. I insisted, we just had to go. My husband kindly agreed.
A couple of days later, we were on the way to the Javits center, and I remember being so overwhelmed with the sheer size of the convention. It never felt busy because the convention was spread out all around the building.
Still, there were a lot of people in the hall where the DS9 chat was.
I was so nervous for some reason. I don’t know why, but seeing actors from a show I loved so well made me scared it would be a disappointment. What if they hated working on the show?
My fears were completely unfounded. It was just SO joyous. They reminisced about the show, told behind the scenes stories and just bantered with each other.

Half of the pictures I took of that talk were blurry from my hands shaking too hard, laughing.
We also saw cast members of Star Trek Enterprise that day, which was such a hilarious talk, but the DS9 talk just trumped everything for me, and made the New York trip so much better than I expected during that miserable first day.
We exited the convention centre, and were treated to the most beautiful sunset.

A perfect ending to a perfect afternoon.
