Be a yellow tulip

Years ago, I took this picture of a field of tulips at the Keukenhof in the Netherlands, and I knew that there was a blog post in this. It’s found me at last.

Earlier this week, I thought about being different online, which is hard to do amidst all the influencers pushing us to get the same thing.

And that’s permeating everything, but, to keep this post simple, I’m only going to talk about things that are related to what I write about on this blog.

Let’s start with reading.

I love to read and I also love to watch my favourite Booktubers talk about books. It does get annoying when they all review the same books.

This often happens because a popular Booktuber says a book is great, and then everyone buys and reviews the book, which makes end-of-year-lists all very similar to each other’s. The same happens with movies and tv-shows.

I notice it with writing too. It manifests in many ways, but let’s look at software for this example.

If you look on writing blogs and Youtube, everyone talks about Scrivener. I use it too, at times, but it’s far from perfect. And I know why you would buy Scrivener.

Everyone says that it’s great, and if x writer uses it, it should be perfect for you too, right?

That’s such a purple tulip thought šŸ˜€

As for me, I bought Scrivener and used it for a while, but it’s not for me. I now I write almost exclusively in my notetaking app. It’s simple and perfect for my needs, and I only move things out of there when I intend to publish them.

If you choose the yellow tulip way, there’s so much to discover. If you are a reader, for instance, you can easily find books you haven’t seen discussed by others everywhere.

Dare to do things different. Be a yellow tulip.
