Draw circles around your fear
Dear Creative Soul,
Did you know that creativity flows best in silence?
I don't mean silence around you, in fact, I love to put on some music when I create.
I mean silence within. The absolute silence of your inner judge, the absence of fear, that is what makes the best creativity time possible.
And the good news is, getting to that state isn't hard. I tell myself I am ready to create, take three deep breaths and go. When fear or doubt crops up, I take another couple of deep breaths, and I am back in the zone again.
This takes practice.
But sometimes, those breaths don’t work, my mind is in overload. What I do then, is draw circles.
It’s so simple to do. Here's what you need:
- pens, pencils, felt pens, markers in an abundance of colours, any drawing medium you have on hand, basically
- Your notebook, artjournal, sketchbook, sheets of paper
Sit with your paper in front of you on a table or in your lap. Take a couple of deep breaths. You are going to draw a circle. Just one circle. That's it.
Take another deep breath and grab a colour from your tools. Hover the pen over the paper and draw a circle on your out breath.
Smile.
Breathe, and get another colour, every time drawing circles on your out breath.
Keep drawing. Keep that gentle flow of breath going. Stay in the moment.
When the circles bore you, move towards drawing squares or triangles or my favourites: flowers. The possibilities are endless!
If fear or doubt show up, tell yourself, “I am only drawing circles, nothing to worry about."
Then draw another one, and another. And then, when your brain is all quiet, ask yourself, “What do I want to create now?”
And do it!
Create on!
Sylvia
