My favourite fantasy books by female authors

Last year I wrote on Mastodon that on Booktube people always have the same books on their best fantasy lists, and they usually aren’t by female authors.

So I decided to write a list of fantasy books by female authors. Some of these standalone, some are a series.

I’ve now updated my list with some recent reads. Here it is, in no particular order:

  1. Robin Hobb - Fitz and the Fool trilogy (start with the Farseer trilogy if you haven’t read the Fitz books yet)
  2. Becky Chambers - A Psalm for the Wild-Built (this is technically science fiction, but it has a definite fantasy feel to it)
  3. Trudy Canavan- Black Magician trilogy
  4. Karen Miller - Kingmaker Kingbreaker
  5. Robin Mc Kinley - The Blue Sword
  6. T. Kingfisher - Nettle & Bone
  7. Lynn Flewelling - Luck in the Shadows
  8. Emma Bull - War for the Oaks
  9. Olivia Atwater - Half a Soul
  10. Mercedes Lackey - The Last Herald-Mage

These books have all in big or small ways influenced me as a writer, as well. Then again, any book does. One of the reasons why writers should read as well 😊
