Savour the ordinary - journaling prompts

When you look back at your life so far, you probably remember the highs and lows pretty well.

What you won’t remember is when everything was simple, uncomplicated, ordinary.

What you won’t remember are the times where creating felt seemingly effortless, or when you were so bored that you finally made something new, just because the boredom is worse than creating.

One of my ordinary creative moments is right now. I’m sitting at the oak table in my living room and I am editing this text.

Tea steams in a cup next to me, sunbeams play across the table. This is just a perfectly ordinary moment in my creative life. I would probably have forgotten in ten years time. That’s a shame.

These ordinary moments need to be savoured, penned down in your journal like all your highs and lows.

Why?

Because there will be times where you feel completely uninspired to create.

There will be times where you think you are a hack, where you start to doubt your creativity.

In those moments it is time to look through your old journals and see all you have written about times where life was just effortless. And then you will see that those ordinary moments, where everything flows, are what life is truly about.

Here are some prompts you could use to savour the ordinary. You could print the list and stick it in your journal as a reminder.

You could use these prompts at any time of the day. When you sit down for breakfast, when you have a break at work, during lunch, when you sip a cup of tea or coffee, catching a breath after exercise, or when you've just had dinner and have some time to journal.

Find your moments in your day, and sit down to observe.

the prompts

Engage all your senses. Look around you. Listen. Watch.

Grab your journal or a notepad and pen, and savour this moment in your life. Nothing is too small or too silly.

Write, doodle, make art, anything goes.
