Set your creativity free

Dear Creative Soul,

It’s so easy to get stuck in headgames about creativity. It’s so easy to stop making things because [insert valid sounding reason].

No matter how valid the reason sounds, it’s basically a misconception about your creativity. Facing all these misconceptions is so hard, but vital for your creative process.

This is why the questions below exist.

If you are a writer or a poet, switch out artist for author and art for story or poem. If you are a crafter… well, you know what I mean.

Now, grab a journal or a notepad and write down the responses to the following questions:
  • What do you think of yourself as an artist?
  • Are there things that you want to create that you don't because [reasons that sound valid]?
  • What are those reasons?
  • Where do they come from?
  • What do you wish you could create when you had no limits?
Put down your pen, and turn the page. It’s time to make a plan.

Before that, though, I want you to know that you have a choice. If you don’t believe me, look back at how Can you see how painful it is not to create something that’s in your heart?

Good news. You can create all you’ve wanted to create from now on.

You can create anything you feel you should make, one day.

You know why?

Your idea deserves the spotlight.

So go.

Make a list of things you want to make. Then...
  • Get some paper.
  • Get some pens.
  • Prep a canvas.
  • Outline your story.
  • Dive into YouTube and find videos of creatives teaching you that one technique you really wanted to learn.
Create your dream, step by step. Give it body. Give it time to grow, to prosper.

Remember this too: no first draft was ever perfect. No first sketch of something was ever absolutely beautiful.

Fear has no power over the smile of someone who creates from the heart.

All that fear you wrote about in response to the questions?

Can you see it for what it is now?

It’s just there to dim your light. Will you let it?

Create on!
Sylvia
