Noodling on writing in a cafe vs at home
I’m writing this in my local cafe, with a Bluetooth keyboard on the screen of my phone. Entirely convenient it is not, but that is not the point.
The point is that every time I enter this cafe, every time I pull out my keyboard and set up my phone on a new Bear note, I’m writing up a storm.
In half an hour I write more than I usually write in a morning.
And I wonder why. The main reason I can come up with is that I’m creating a sort of ritual here, starting with leaving the home, and then setting out everything on the table.
It makes me ponder an experiment for when I’m back home.
What if I put everything away at night in my office? Create a blank space for myself every day, and then in the morning enter, set a fresh cup of coffee on the table and then open my laptop to write?
It would be so nice if that worked, but I know myself.
If I set out my laptop and open it, there are a LOT of distractions that pull in my attention. My browser offers the world, my apps have all sorts of things I can work on.
The key is recreating this experience. The coffee, the Bluetooth keyboard, grabbing my phone, opening Bear on a new note, and then just type type type.
Is it a silly idea to not just open my laptop? More convenient?
Yes.
But will I write more?
Probably, yes.
I will report back on my experiences.
