I’m so eager to be more like the fool this year, and one of the things that represents for me is satisfying my curiosity in so many things.

When I was a child, I was always on a journey of eager discovery, and my favourite tool for discoverysom were books. I always came armed with books. I went to the library to learn about so many things.

All the children’s non-fiction was divided up into neat categories, and I vowed early on that I would read and learn something from each one of those.

I brought back books about far-away countries, about biology, about important people and events from history, about wars, about languages and how they developed, about nature and all the wildness that seemed ever so foreign to me.

I did also read lots and lots of fiction, but the non-fiction books, those were my ticket to another life. And now I am back on the fool’s journey, just like I was then.

I feel the same excitement in discovering things again, and it is ever so joyful. My companion is not a small white dog, but my companion is the child I was, chattering away about things that she wants to learn about, and it is a delight.
